Instructions for Replacing FIL/SC-REF16 | FIL/SC-REF32 whole house anti-scale media
Product Codes: FIL/SC-REF16 | FIL/SC-REF32
Thank you for your purchase and for choosing the greener option for replacing your media
How to Replace Your Media/Powder
Turn off the water supply.
Take a bucket and place it under the filter housing to catch any water spillage.
Then press the red or black button on top of the housing unit (if you have one) to release pressure. Otherwise open up the cold water kitchen tap.
Remove the bottom housing from the head (Lefty loosey / righty tighty!)
Remove the cartridge and open it Green topped “SC” coded Scale Centurion cartridges are a quarter turn twist / pull off)
White “FIL” coded cartridges are either as above or have a jam jar type lid at the bottom which unscrews
Discard the old media. (The water filter black media can go on flower beds etc - but not on compost. The old Scale Centurion should be put in the bin - it cannot be recycled).
Rinse out the cartridge casing with cold soapy water and wash the rubber washer on top of the cartridge casing in warm soapy water - to remove any residue. Then rinse.
Carefully pour the new media into the cartridge casings.
CAUTION: With the water filter / white cartridge you will get a very fine carbon dust in the air. This will be minimal but if you’re very asthmatic you may choose to do the pouring outside.
Media / Powder Quantities
To make one FIL16 use TWO bags of FIL-REFTo make one SC16 use ONE bag of SC-REF
To make one SC32 use TWO bags of SC-REF
Do Not Overfill
Both types of media / powder have been carefully measured.
- White FIL cartridges / black powder: There should be a GAP / SPACE of at least 3 inches between the black powder and the top of the cartridge. This is because the powder slowly expands when wet.
- With the Scale Centurion / white powder . The cartridge should be less than a third full. This expands in the water.
Re-Insert Cartridges
When done, close and put back the cartridges into the housing unit.
Position top and bottom correctly ie carefully guide the top of the cartridge up into the centering slot making sure you guide it carefully past any centralising prongs.
Close housing unit.
Once you are sure the cartridge is seated correctly inside the housing, tighten it by hand, then use the wrench to tighten it reasonably - don’t overtighten.
Optionally, before closing put some Vaseline around the large black rubber orings to lubricate them. You can also dab some on the screw threads to make it easier to open next time (but do not put Vaseline on the cartridges).
Note re Blue Head / White Bottom style Housings: A fully closed housing has a gap of 2mm to 3mm max between the lower blue nut and the blue top. You can get fairly close to this gap screwing it by hand. Then use the wrench to give it a final tightening. BUT if you need to use a lot of force with the wrench to achieve that 2mm / 3mm then there is a problem. If so check the internal cartridge is inserted correctly.
Note re Black Head / Blue bottom style Housings: When closing the housing up, watch out for the prongs / guides under the black header unit. A loose cartridge might mis-align and be damaged / pierced by them.
When closed turn the water supply back on. (If you have a bypass valve make sure it is turned back on).
Open up your cold water taps for 5 minutes and flush toilets to let any trapped air escape.
The water may look cloudy for a while but will settle down.
